Wards Creek Restoration Initiative:

Building Fire-Adapted Communities in Rogue River

At Wards Creek Restoration Initiative, we believe that knowledge is the foundation of resilience. As a Rogue River-based 501(c)(3) non-profit, we host regular educational classes and workshops designed to help residents prepare for wildfire, understand defensible space, and become active stewards of the local ecosystem.

Our programs bring together community members, local experts, and partner organizations to:

  • Build awareness of wildfire risk and preparedness strategies

  • Offer practical training on evacuation planning and home hardening

  • Foster a culture of sustainable land management and ecological care

Through education and collaboration, we're helping create a safer, more informed, and fire-adapted Rogue River region.

News & Updates

We’re excited to share that our major restoration project along the Ward Creek corridor in Rogue River is now underway — the work began on October 14. We’re tackling invasive blackberry thickets that threaten both fire safety and stream health. Starting mid-October, our partners at Ward’s Creek Restoration Initiative and M&M Services are working to open the stream-side area, allowing natural regeneration: planting native trees, shrubs, and ground cover to help stabilize stream banks, improve water quality, and support fish and wildlife.

This project is directly funded by the Oregon State Fire Marshal and has strong support from the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Oregon Department of Forestry, making it a collaborative effort for our community’s future.

We’re creating a healthier, fire-resistant corridor and laying the groundwork for future restoration efforts. Our vision is for our community to walk alongside Ward Creek—enjoying its beauty and renewed vitality, and appreciating this precious waterway that flows through our town.
